Year 8 Student Inspired To Dance
Year 8 student, Jamie Cooper, started dancing at Petersfield Academy of Dance (PAD) at the age of 3 - initially to help loosen his tight hamstring muscles - and at 5 was mesmerised by a DVD of the Bolshoi Ballet’s “The Nutcracker” featuring Irek Mukhamedov as the Prince. Irek is widely acclaimed as one of the finest male classical ballet dancers of recent years, noted for his power, elegance and superb acting ability. The young Jamie was inspired and wanted to be like him, and has since been lucky enough to meet him twice at English National Ballet master classes where he is now a coach.
In 2015 Jamie successfully auditioned for the Central School of Ballet in London and travels up every Friday and Saturday for rehearsals and classes in ballet, Pilates and contemporary dance.
He has been celebrating a series of dance successes recently. He was selected to tour with London Children’s Ballet before half term and was Grandfather in the company’s adaptation of “Little Lord Fauntleroy”. Jamie very much enjoyed the experience, which was extremely important for his development as a dancer and performer in classical ballet.
Since then, Jamie has secured a Distinction in his Grade 4 Ballet exam and has been selected by the Central School of Ballet to appear in their Junior School Show in May - the only boy chosen to dance in the show from his class.
Jamie says, “It’s hard work, but my ultimate ambition is to be a professional ballet dancer with an English company.”
