Festival of Young Composers
Last weekend, the Festival of Young Composers took place at the Studio@TPS, open to young composers from the Petersfield area.
Samantha Wood, Head of Music, had nominated two Year 11 students, Ben Coles and Hannah Hastings, both who had written exceptional compositions. They performed their compositions live in front of a judging panel which included Philip Young, Head of the Petersfield Musical Festival and two professional composers. The judges watched the performances whilst looking at the students’ notated scores of their work, and then gave detailed feedback in front of the audience.
Ben Coles was awarded first place with his composition of an original song - A Truth and a Lie, composed for full a rock band and performed on the day solely by Ben using his loop pedal.
Hannah Hasting was awarded third place with her sophisticated piano composition Le Crepuscule et l'Aube (Dusk and Dawn).
Ben will perform his composition at the Petersfield Musical Festival on Monday 12 March at the Festival Hall, and has been awarded a cash prize to put towards further musical study.
Samantha Wood said, “I was extremely proud to have had two TPS students in the final three in their Under-16 category. Both Ben and Hannah performed brilliantly with a real command of their instrument and showed the true skills of a composer.”
