TPS Welcomes Chinese Visitors

Last month we welcomed 20 Chinese students to TPS to experience life in England for two weeks.  Each student was paired with a TPS student and attended all of their lessons and stayed with their family.  It was a fantastic opportunity for both the TPS students and the Chinese students to get an insight into each other’s lives and cultures.  The Chinese students came from the province of Guangdong (5,949 miles away from Petersfield!), a coastal province of southeast China that borders Hong Kong and Macau.

We had fantastic feedback from their teachers that the students really made the most of their time in lessons.  They impressed in dance and music lessons, with one of them performing classic Chinese pieces on the piano.  They enjoyed their day at Harry Potter World in London, where they bought scarves to keep them warm in the UK climate, and another highlight was seeing snow, which was the first time ever for many of them, in the second week.

They also visited both Oxford and Cambridge Universities to take part in a debate competition.  They had been working hard all week with our debating club to hone their skills and they performed very well, debating in English against the other teams.

Finally, they all had an amazing time with their host families over the two weeks.  They went to the beach, visited Portsmouth and tried English/Chinese takeaways, although they did all really miss traditional home-cooked Chinese food!

It’s been wonderful for the whole TPS community to have the students with us and we will be exploring more links with China later this year.  We are living through a seismic rebalancing of economic and political power from west to east and it’s important that our students are better prepared for this by having direct experiences with people from other parts of the world.
