FLOW STATES 1

‘To disappear into deep water or to disappear towards a far horizon, to become a part, or depth, or infinity such is the destiny of man that finds images in the destiny of water.’

Gaston Bachelard

Flow, also referred to as The Optimal Experience, is a concept developed by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It is the state in which a person is so involved in an activity that nothing else seems to matter. It is both pleasant and productive.

Working with the camera is exhilarating, wholly absorbing, opening up an exciting experience of discovery. Moving or still, the camera explores surfaces, captures light, highlighting unnoticed phenomena, visible, then almost immediately invisible, leaving a sense of expectation, excitement, bewilderment, wonder and awe.

Water can be used as a metaphor for the unconscious mind. In Sanskrit it is translated as ‘life force’ or ‘force which animates’. A fascination with water, whether inland or sea, has endured ever since I can remember. Light sparkling and dancing , the movement spellbinding, the sound; a tiny trickle, to the heavy pounding of turbulent waves, never fails to excite and entice. I spend hours watching and listening.

The images on display are only a few of many and represent many hours of enjoyment and Optimal Experience.

Di Peisley
