History Trip

On Monday 19 March I went on a History trip to London for the Medicine through Time course. First we went for a public health walk all around the London Bridge area where we learnt all about the poor sanitation and the cholera outbreaks and many more interesting facts about London’s history of disease and public health. It was hard to imagine anything as bad as that. It was incredibly interesting and the guide telling us the information was really good at explaining everything that was around during all the different periods of history in London and I learnt a lot of new things on the subject.

Next we went to the Old Operating Theatre Museum which is above an old church. The apothecary is up an old circular wooden staircase in the roof space and was full of herbs, tinctures, medicine bottles and medical samples and body parts. In the operating theatre next door, we watched a woman demonstrate how an amputation would have been done when the theatre was used in the 18th century. She selected a volunteer from the audience – in our case it was Mr Robjohn – and set about the "amputation”. She made sure that she put in all the shocking facts so that we could really understand how bad it was when the theatre was used. She did a very good job of putting in a lot of facts in quite a short period of time, and I came away with a brain full of things that she had said that will be helpful in the history course.

Finally we went to the Science Museum. After walking up what felt like every set of stair in the entire museum, we finally reached the Medicine through Time section on the top floor. It was really interesting to see all the Ancient Medicine and also to see real objects that were used instead of just hearing about them or seeing replicas. The museum was packed full of information that will really help me.

The day was really enjoyable and definitely worthwhile. I took with me a little bit of knowledge but I came back with lots of knowledge. It will help me during this course and I am definitely glad that I went.
