TPS students who sat their GCSEs this summer attended a Prize Giving Evening this week to receive their certificates and individual subject prizes. The event took place at The Festival Hall and this year’s Guest Speaker was the actor Hugh Bonneville of "Downton Abbey” and "Notting Hill” fame.
The evening began with a welcome from this year’s Head Boy Charlie Essex and Head Girl Kate Wilderspin, followed by a flute duet by Year 11 students Lauren Hunt and Zoe Wands and later a brass trio by James Lomas, Joel Knee and Philip Smith.
Principal Nigel Poole reflected on the school’s amazing year of achievements including the conversion to Academy status and the best ever GCSE results. Hugh Bonneville gave an entertaining and amusing speech about his early years as an actor and the need to grab every opportunity when it comes.
When the formal ceremonies were over, students, parents and guests gathered in the Rose Room for drinks and enjoyed catching up with friends.
Nigel Poole commented, "It was a great evening, and I was pleased to see so many friends, ex-students and representatives of the community. I am grateful to Hugh for giving up his time to join us this evening.”
Hugh Bonneville obviously enjoyed himself too – he later Tweeted to his 26,000 followers globally: "Very happy evening with alumni of The Petersfield School celebrating their GCSE results and the school’s status as an Academy. Inspiring.”
