Another Year of Outstanding GCSE Results!

Students and staff at The Petersfield School are today celebrating another year of outstanding GCSE results.

Overall, 83% of students at the school achieved a grade 4 or better in English and in Maths, matching the record results achieved last year.  A grade 4 is defined by the Government as a pass under the new 9 to 1 grading system.  Additionally, well over half of students (60%) achieved at least a grade 5 (defined as a strong pass by the Government) in both of these subjects.

With strengths across the board, results in English and Maths were particularly impressive, with 90% of students achieving at least a grade 4 in English and 87% being awarded a grade 4 or higher in maths.  Other GCSE subjects where over 90% of students achieved a grade 4 or above included History, German, Economics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Dance, Music, Religious Studies, Photography and Media.  A third of all grades awarded to students at TPS this year were at the 7 to 9 (A*/A) standard!

The Petersfield School is also celebrating the very high proportion of students achieving the English Baccalaureate, the set of key academic subjects that universities and employers are most impressed by.  Over 80% of the students who took these subjects achieved a grade 4 or above, which is significantly higher than the national average.

Sarah Arnold was the highest achieving student with an incredible nine grade 9s, the highest grade possible, equivalent to an A**!  Sarah is planning to study A Level English Literature, History and Geography plus an EPQ in Law at Bohunt Sixth Form.  She said, “I am so surprised, so proud and so happy with my results!  I’d like to thank all of the teachers at TPS who have supported me so well – especially Mr Findlay in Maths!”

There were several other outstanding individual success stories:

Katie Beken achieved 8 grade 9s and 2 grade 8s.  She said, “I am so happy, I did not expect to do so well! I am particularly grateful to my MFL teacher because I struggled in this subject but with her support I got an 8!”

William J Jones got 7 grade 9s and 2 grade 8s.  He said, “I’m relieved and thrilled. All my teachers were so supportive and I am now going on to college to study Maths, Biology and a third subject I’ve yet to decide on!”

Outgoing Head Girl Elizabeth Church gained 6 grade 9s, 2 grade 8s and a grade 7. She said, “I am especially pleased with my results as the grade boundaries were so tough this year. I would like to thank all my teachers for their support, especially Mr Blandford-Davies in Maths.”

Conall Templeman got 5 grade 9s, 4 grade 8s and a grade 7. He said, “I feel ecstatic! This is the best feeling ever! I can’t believe I’ve smashed it! Huge thanks to everyone for their support, especially Dr Weavis who helped me achieve a grade 9 in English Literature!”  Conall is going on to study A Level Maths, Physics, Art and Product Design at college.

There were other happy stories of great progress.  Beth White said, “I am so happy with my results.  I always really struggled in Maths, but with the support of my teacher and lots of hard work, I got a grade 5!”  Beth is now going on to Havant & South Downs College to study a BTech in Psychology, Criminology & Law.

The Petersfield School was rated Outstanding in every category by Ofsted in 2018, with inspectors praising the very high expectations set by school leaders and teachers’ excellent subject knowledge leading to exceptionally high standards. The report also said how the school “greatly benefits from being part of Bohunt Education Trust”.

Mark Marande, Principal at The Petersfield School, said:

“We are thrilled with today’s results which match our best ever GCSE results.  Students, staff and families of our school can all be incredibly proud of their achievements and hard work, especially in light of the more challenging new GCSEs. They demonstrate another year of exceptional dedication by everyone involved with our school – our students, their parents and our staff.”

Neil Strowger, Chief Executive of Bohunt Education Trust, said:

“At Bohunt Education Trust, we are committed to ensuring the achievement of every student, and we are delighted that The Petersfield School’s Year 11 students have received the excellent results that they so richly deserve.”
