A Summer of Sporting Excellence!

The country has been enjoying a fabulous summer of sporting success for England so far in 2019.  With the England women’s football team reaching a nail biting World Cup semi final, the England Cricket team winning the World Cup last weekend and Lewis Hamilton securing a record sixth British Grand Prix win, there has already been plenty of great achievements to inspire our students.  This is to say nothing of the Netball World Cup, currently underway as I write this in Liverpool, with England real contenders to win.  Additionally, a very welcome and noticeable change this year has been the much increased focus on women's sport across the country.

At TPS we are also celebrating a fantastic summer of sporting success, in many ways mirroring the national picture.  Our Y10 cricket team has ended their school sport career with a phenomenal unbeaten run since joining the school in Year 7!  They have never lost a match since they started paying for TPS four years ago and this is a completely unprecedented achievement.  Our Year 10 Under 16 girls football team have an amazing season, reaching the Hampshire Cup Final before sadly losing on penalties.  They showed real determination and the game could easily have gone the other way.

We have also had some very notable individual sporting achievements but unfortunately I only have the space to highlight a few here (see later in this issue of ToPicS for more information).  Hattie Bond has been storming athletics this term with a brilliant Under 13 victory at the Hampshire Championships in the 800m.  Betti Smith won the Young Sportswomen of the Year Award in the Havant District for her running success, Hugo Cary is representing Scotland in Rugby and Felix Coomber will be representing England in gymnastics.  Andrew Lewis recently secured the national title in the 15/16 year old boys trampolining finals in Coventry.  Our students have also made the school proud in sailing, more athletics, football, clay pigeon shooting and karting this term to name just a few!

This week also saw our new style end of year Sports Presentation Event, with over 400 students and parents gathering to celebrate individual and team sporting endeavours in a fun and informal manner.  We are so incredibly proud of all of our students who participate in the many activities that they are dedicated to and passionate about.

Finally, a special mention to Mr Ramshaw, our Head of PE, who leaves us for promotion at the end of this term after 13 years at TPS of tirelessly sharing his love of sport with our students.  Thank you and good luck for the future.

I want to wish all of our families a great summer and we look forward to seeing you back in September.
