Former Student Opens Newly Refurbished Art Department

TPS Alumnus, George Gilliatt, visited the Visual Arts department yesterday afternoon to speak to GCSE students about his experience on his journey through arts education and into his exciting career as a Lego Product Designer in Denmark.

George told the students that a determination to follow his dreams and show others his passion for what he loves and believes in was key to getting him where he is today. The students enjoyed hearing about his choices of study through college and Brighton University, which helped to shape his successful career path.  He said, “TPS always felt like a safe place to express myself and my hobbies without fear of being told I wasn’t cool for playing with toys.  Many teachers encouraged me to utilise LEGO in my work in Art, DT and even Maths and Geography!  Two of my LEGO designs have been launched worldwide over recent months.”

George was then asked to cut a ribbon to officially open our newly refurbished Art department. The look and feel of our new study environment is amazing, with new floors, ceilings, windows and furniture making the space feel bright and spacious – all enhanced by new resources and fantastic display areas.  The next chapter for our artists in our new look art department has officially begun!

Yesterday evening the Visual Arts Department staff were delighted to welcome many of our TPS leavers back to celebrate their amazing creative achievements during their time with us. The breadth and quality of the work on display was remarkable, especially considering the upheaval to their studies due to the pandemic last year.

Gary Leeson, Head of Art, said, “It was wonderful to see so many of our leavers back and hear all about their experiences so far at college.”
