Did you know that 80% of plastic in our oceans is from land sources such as littering? The plastic is either dropped or blown from rubbish lorries and ends up in drains and other running water systems, eventually finding its way out to the ocean, damaging wildlife and contributing to climate change.
As part of our celebration of The Great British Spring Clean this week, the Eco-Committee have been out litter picking on the Tesco Water Meadows behind the school where we filled two big sacks with plastic waste, and one bag with cans and plastic bottles for recycling. Rubbish which would otherwise pose a hazard to wildlife, an eyesore for locals and possibly even get down to the ocean and cause harm there.
Committee Coordinator Suz Lambert said, “Thanks to everyone who came – it was great fun helping to keep Petersfield tidy! In one student’s word, ‘It was surprisingly therapeutic!’”
