Just before the Easter holiday, a group of Year 9 students attended a STEM day at Whitman Laboratories in Petersfield, home of Estee Lauder products.
The business began as a family-run business in New York in 1946 and has grown into a global leader of beauty products, working out of over 150 countries. The brands include MAC, Clinique, Jo Malone and Bobbi Brown amongst many others.
Our students were invited to have a look at the whole manufacturing side of the company and see how the raw ingredients are brought into the premises, progress to the mixing stage and finally the bottling stage. The students were able to try La Mer, considered one of the most expensive creams in the world, before trying their hand at designing their own beauty brand. The students were put into groups and had a Dragon’s Den exercise where they pitched to and were then grilled by Estee Lauder dragons (members of the management team!)
Careers Coordinator Karen Heath said, “The students blew me away with their enthusiasm for the activity and they convinced me that their mix of sustainable and moderately priced beauty products were a real winner! It is a sign of the times when they all said they would employ a social media influencer to promote their brands! I was super proud of them all.”
The Petersfield School would like to thank Estee Lauder for the opportunity to see STEM in action and a huge thank you for organising such a great experience for our students.
