A huge thank you to the fantastic Year 8 Literacy Ambassadors who, after thorough discussion and extensive dissection of a selection of shortlisted texts, reached a unanimous decision on the text that will replace The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas for Year 8’s Spring term TPS Reads text.
This was an exciting opportunity for students to exercise their student voice and help shape the TPS Reads whole school initiative. Students met with the Literacy Team and students had physical copies of the shortlisted texts to leaf through. To help them reach a decision, students read passages from each text, discussed the cover and blurb, debated and explained which writing style and plot they preferred, and took turns in explaining why.
Miss Green and Miss Jones also modelled the reading aloud process to the students to emulate how the text will be read aloud by all Year 8 tutors in practice – this was followed by a democratic vote in which all students voted for Evernight by Ross Mackenzie as the book they felt was most engaging and Year 8 would enjoy during their weekly TPS Reads sessions.
